I do not know what I would have done without this App.
It has way too many pop up ads that you cant even exit out of immediately. Disappointed to know m-w is a sellout
As far as the dictionary goes, I would give this app 4 or maybe even 5 stars. I like the pronunciation guide and the audio feature to hear the word aloud. Definitions are clear and examples are plentiful and useful. Etymologies are present and complete, giving deeper insight into meanings and providing connections to related words. In addition, synonyms and antonyms are suggested where applicable. So, why only one star? At first I was very pleased with the app. Seeing a few ads along the way was expected. After all, it was free...to me. However, not only is there an ever-present ad strip at the bottom edge, ads are now embedded in the middle of definitions. If that were not enough, a full screen ad often pops up when following links or looking up other words. Finally, the ad strip at the bottom sometimes obscures information about a word. Embedded ads can block information as well. On one occasion I scrolled down to the secondary usage of a word (definition #2) and it was completely blocked. It did not appear after the ad; it simply did not appear. For me...it is no longer enjoyable, but frustrating and marginally useful. Ill go back to a book before using this app again.
Im a word aficionado and I got this app because it was listed under dictionaries containing etymologies and information on word origins. It has NO etymology section under the words. It only has the word "etymology" shown in the diagram picture of the app. Nasty trick!
Apart from the easy to use dictionary, the games are awesome. Weve had fun playing name that thing!
I have an older model, so Im not able to access most apps; but, of the ones I have access to, this is the best. Its not bloated with excess advertising and needless additional features; makes it much easier to access definitions without interfering too much between reading.
It is a sad day when I cant even look up a word in the dictionary without mandatory pop-up ads.
This app used to be amazing! It had a great interface and was quick and easy to use. I know you guys have to make money somehow, but I should not have to navigate around 5 ads per page with pop up ads every 30 seconds. Ill be switching to another dictionary app.
I used to like this app. But now there are too many ads and its frustrating to navigate. The pop up ads are particularly annoying.
I use this app frequently to find definitions, and even more frequently to play it word quizzes Nice App!
The word of the day is deteriorate because they need to back to using Dragon for their speech recognition. The speech rec they use now is very low quality:-(
Have used app for years--suddenly doesnt work anymore. Any searched word leads me to the definition of "country". If it is trying to tell me something, the message is over my head.
The dictionary gets lost in ads. They are in the way when scrolling and pop up constantly.
Inused to depend on MW for authoritative definitions of words. Now I just see them as another website that depends on ads and usership. They are almost monopolizing the dictionary industry in the US, and they make their interatitial ads pop up too often and for too long. Also, sometimes the word Im searching for isnt even the first choice. I have to stroll down through other words to see the word that has the exact spelling as what Im looking for. I dont know whats wrong with these people now, but theyve also discontinued any print version of dictionaries, further cutting their expenses and now primarily out there to get money. A bunch of BS.
The audio does not work. The microphone fails to detect the pronounced word for evaluation.
It does what it says. There are ads, but for those of us with any kind of phalangeal dexterity, youll be fine. The games are fun of youre into words like phalangeal. Its free. Just get it. Actually, the fact youre reading this instead of forming your own opinion is a good indicator this isnt for you. Id recommend some friends. Give me a call, I obviously need some too. Im reviewing a dictionary in my spare time.
No questions or confusions simple straight foward definitions, rather than other "dictionarys"
In all fairness, this is quite good for a free dictionary. But I cant help but notice that ads are becoming increasingly intrusive both in terms of number and quality. (full frame ads now? Seriously?) Please deal with this now and get back on the right course before more users take flight. I love Merriam Websters dictionary and its concise and skillfully crafted definitions, but it deserves far better ratings than this.
I cant count how many times Ive tried to use this Webster dictionary and it does not work. Very disappointed!
